Energy ELectric Debate supply and demand

A hardly any years past, Jeffrey Dukes, a US biologist, was driving through the deserts of Utah on his way to a investigate station. Equally his car ate up the miles, he began thinking in this area the fuel in the tank, and the plants with the intention of it had occur from. How many ancient plants, he wondered, had it taken to power him across the desert? He asked around, but couldn't discover made known. "The more I searched, the more frustrated I got. No lone knew the answer." So he did the sums himself. He worked made known with the intention of a staggering 25 tonnes of sow topic energy into each single litre of petrol. "I realised," says Dukes, "that near everything I sort out depends in the lead plants with the intention of grew millions of years past; and with the intention of lacking them, my life would be completely uncommon."
Dukes realised could you repeat that? Generally of us take pro granted: With the intention of the present planet we live in is shaped by could you repeat that? He remarkably calls "buried sunshine": Fossil fuels. We all aid around 15 era the energy with the intention of we did 300 years past, previous to the manufacturing revolution. US energy desk, Steven Chu, likes to tell Americans with the intention of they all be inflicted with the equivalent of a hundred slaves working pro them. That's the amount of muscle power with the intention of would be inflicted with to be substituted pro fossil fuel. Energy has shaped our society. It governs everywhere and how we live; could you repeat that? We munch; and how we travel.

And yet, despite all the doubts in this area climate exchange and energy security, here is a fundamental question with the intention of we rarely ask: Why sort out we need so much energy to power our lives?

Debates in this area energy focus overwhelmingly on energy supply. Should we energy pro renewables, nuclear or both? Want carbon capture and storage space bring about? What happens if Russia cuts rancid equipment of chatter? These questions are commonly asked, and answered, by a small assemble of technical specialists in affair and government – the kinds of public who can have a discussion with enthusiasm in this area electricity promote reform and renewables obligation certificates.

Sure, in contemporary years, here has been a very salutation focus on energy efficiency, pro buildings and convey in fastidious. But the basic idea is this: We can boost efficiency, and use instead high-carbon pro low-carbon energy, and our lives will stay pretty much the same as they are currently.

This is solely not real. There are models – commissioned by all from government to Greenpeace – which plot how we can decarbonise our energy supply. But all these models get on to massive assumptions in this area could you repeat that? Is doable. They take upon yourself eye-watering amounts of investment, bold government plan, optimistic build tariff pro extra equipment, a supportive broadcast and a skilled dose of good luck. The reports are to the top with caveats explaining the obstacles: The message is "it's exceptionally trying, but it might solely be possible". Yet politicians ignore the warnings and translate all the caveats, risks and assumptions into a much simpler, politics-free story in this area the path to a low-carbon prospect.

And since of the breathless enthusiasm pro low-carbon supply, much a reduced amount of planning is agreed to the demand feature. But a reduction in overall demand pro energy may possibly be cheaper, and comparatively easier, though by thumbs down earnings straightforward, to bring in this area.

So could you repeat that? Would in fact take place if we got serious in this area sinking energy demand?

The initially step in a extra energy politics would be to think it over energy as a broadcast skilled, not a confidential commodity. Government needs to mess about a role in shaping energy outcomes, in the same way with the intention of it shapes shape and education outcomes. This earnings policies and incentives to affect the way with the intention of public aid energy, both frankly and indirectly – pro buildings, food, trade and travel, pro model. It would need input from all government departments, not solely the Department pro Energy and Climate Change.

Land-use planning would focus much more on creating carbon-efficient settlements. This is already early to take place in the US, everywhere many decades of low-cost smear with oil and lax planning be inflicted with resulted in extensive settlements like Atlanta, by 120 miles large. Now, the US Smart Growth movement advocates compact towns and walkable neighbourhoods, with "hubs" of retail and employment services close to convey interchanges. Inside other terms, and with extensive irony, they are in conflict to recreate the thought of the distinguished street. Yet at this time in the UK, the current planning reforms are taking us in the opposite direction, headed for greater stretch.

There would be much more of a focus on the energy implications of food. At around 12% of all person's whole conservatory chatter consumption, the energy and carbon implications of farming are enormous, yet effectively unseen by government plan. Incentives pro better ground management, and community, seasonal food and drink would get on to a massive difference – and help rural economies.

Getting serious in this area energy demand would mean facing up to the realities of international trade, and the embodied energy in goods with the intention of we import from overseas. If we thing this in, our carbon emissions are in fact rising, not falling – and it's not responsibility our balance of payments much skilled, either.

Together, this would add up to a extra politics of energy, which asks the fundamental questions in this area how and why energy is used, very than assuming with the intention of progress depends on a continued supply of abundant energy. A politics with the intention of future-proofs our communities, by preparing them pro appearance resource constraints. One with the intention of doesn't expect our energy dilemmas can be solved by technical interventions by a small assemble of experts, but which as a replacement for acknowledges with the intention of our history has been shaped by energy, and our prospect will be, too.

Very Smart Arch of SSD

While organizations increasingly adopt data-intensive applications—data analytics, transactional databases, geospatial applications, virtual environments, cloud computing, and more—the amount of data with the aim of ought to be stored is exploding. Seagate estimates with the aim of the compound twelve-monthly growth rate (CAGR) in place of digital data stored is 50 %.

The wear out of these applications to get by vast amounts of data quickly and achieve a competitive improvement is driving demand in place of high-performance solid state drive (SSD) knowledge in the data core. According to the Gartner Group, the enterprise SSD marketplace grew from approximately 320,000 units and US$485 million in sales in 2009 to more than 1 million units and on US$1 billion in sales in 2010. Gartner forecasts with the aim of the enterprise SSD marketplace will mushroom to 9.4 million units and US$4.2 billion in sales by 2015 [1].
SSDs relinquish the highest- performance luggage compartment in gumboot haste, random IOPS and other measures essential to the enterprise. For instance, while the usual enterprise- seminar 15K-RPM powerfully floppy disk drive (HDD) achieves 350 to 400 random read/write IOPS, the usual enterprise-class SSD can motivation 50,000 IOPS in place of random reads and 15,000K IOPS in place of random writes.

Yet the remarkable performance of SSDs has overshadowed their deceptive shortcomings in the area of endurance. Unlike magnetic HDDs, which can undergo an unrestricted quantity of write/erase cycles, the quantity of time remembrance cells on the instant drive can be erased is predetermined. With wear out, instant cells wear out—and whilst they resolve, the drive can happen to unreliable.

Client Versus venture SSD Endurance Requirements
SSDs were basic used in consumer policy, together with cameras and MP3 players, and soon made their way into laptop computers. While data loss is a relate to in place of laptop and other PC users, it has far greater implications in place of SSDs as they move into enterprise data centers with the aim of get by an organization’s nearly everyone of great consequence organization in turn. Clothed in the enterprise, unreliable luggage compartment can destabilize customer satisfaction and, as an broadening, revenue generation through lost organization and even interrupt essential organization processes.

Like HDDs, SSDs ought to be residential to join the differing needs of client and enterprise workloads. Client SSDs, typically used in laptop systems serving single user rebuff more than 8 to 10 hours apiece daylight hours, look far fewer rigors than data core SSDs, which work 24x7 and ought to service random data patterns, highly composite reads/writes, and applications with the aim of are far more write-intensive than in some client claim. What’s more, enterprise SSDs ought to work by the side of a much senior temperatures than client SSDs and offer senior Uncorrectable Bit Error Rates (UBER) to ensure round-the-clock data integrity.

SSD policy from diverse vendors vary considerably in their capability to join these anxiety. Until recently, it has been challenging to test vendor claims of SSD endurance in enterprise applications.
Clothed in September 2010, the JEDEC Solid State Association in print two sets of values in place of SSD endurance and reliability. JESD218A defines endurance verification necessities in place of both client and enterprise SSDs. JESD219 defines workload endurance necessities in place of enterprise SSDs solitary. These values list necessities in place of both claim seminar, illustrate a test style, and create an SSD Endurance Rating with the aim of provides a standard comparison in place of SSD endurance based on claim seminar, as given away in Table 1 [2]. The endurance rating is spoken as a Terabytes Written (TBW) quantity describing how much data can be in black and white to a device on its generation. These values kind it easier to compare client and enterprise products.

Feng Shui is an ancient eastern art of thousands of years that teaches us how to arrange the elements in our environment to attract good fortune, prosperity and health.

Wind and Water are Feng Shui Chinese characters that mean and represent the close relationship between the teachings of the art and the respect for the forces of nature. The Feng Shui rules are simple: positive energy or Chi is in accordance with nature, should be found all around us. This principle can be successfully applied to a garden.

The first step in choosing your home gardening statuettes is setting the general theme of your home garden. It's not a good idea to fill your home gardening space with several different stories. Pick one that you like most and stick to it.

For example, if you choose the birds to be part of your universe, choose green statuettes in the shape of flowers, trees, birds and cages. The overall theme of your home garden needs to correlate with your mood and your character.

Another idea is the theme of angels. You can choose statues of various shapes and sizes, with face of angel child or adult. Don't overlook any religious statues. In this case, sky is the limit.

These objects can be particularly important if you want to have corner of your garden that will stand out. Well, if you managed to make your dream space, full of flowers, but is somewhat secluded, a statue of this kind placed in the middle of that space will certainly attract attention.

Its size is determined by size of surrounding plants. If the plants are tall, you need to choose a high statuette.

In conclusion, the home gardening statuettes are the simplest way to give a touch of live to your home garden.

AMD A8-3530MX review

The A8 series 3530MX is the meanest and badest of the first wave of new APU's from AMD. And even before the first laptops with the new 3530MX hits the shelves there is evidence that it has some significant advantages over Intel and their latest Sandy Bridge chips.

Why is the A8-3530MX special? Well for a start it has a Radeon HD 6620G graphics circuitry built right into the CPU. That's why they call it Fusion and AMD's not totally unreasonable claims that this is something different to a CPU. Read the full AMD A8-3530MX review

Qualcomm Snapdragon Vs NVIDIA Tegra 2

By guest writer Ojwango in Kenya.

With the competition to provide the best mobile devices in the market hots up, we take aquick look at two of the major players in the SoC (system on chip) arena. Previously, the first generation of the Snapdragon chips were common in phones like HD2, Nexus One, and Evo 4G providing what was considered at the time to be great performance. However, with the advancement in technology, a new generation of the Snapdragon chips known as the Qualcomm Snapdragon has been developed to step up the possibilities for applications in phones.

Unlike the NVIDIA Tegra 2, the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip is developed not to use the processor based on the ARM-designed chip. However, the application has a Qualcomm designed the core that have several features to improves its functionality. Unlike the last Snapdragon chips generation from Nexus One which depended on the 65nm process tech, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon allows phones to increase their performance. They can now use the 45nm technology that has more transistors.

Like the Snapdragon, Tegra 2 has to upgrade its applications. After realizing that Nvidia was making any progress with the Tegra, they decided to upgrade their application to what is now known as the Tegra 2 platform. TheTegra 2 platform has significantly exploded Android platforms in the market. Another notable diffences between them is that the Tegra 2 platform uses a high density transistor than the Qualcomm Snapdragon which is A8-based chips. Likewise, contrary to the Qualcomm Snapdragon, the NVIDIA Tegra 2 uses a 40nm manufacturing process.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The news and stories of the Samsung Galaxy Tab has been abuzz since early 2010. As Samsung released smart phones installed with the Android operating system, it was expected that the tablet version of this line up will surely be impressive. First generation tablets are starting to go down in the local market, but will the new Samsung Galaxy Tab stream in the competition?

This tablet is similar to both a smart phone and a laptop but with few twists. The 7-inch tablet device can be held in one hand without being bulky. Its 7- inch display is made by gorilla glass, so it is essential to keep it protected every time. It approximately weighs 375 grams making it lighter and smaller than other tablet brand models. Its design can be best described as solid, clean and sleek. The back is made out of plastic.

This tablet is not a phone but its applications and connectivity enables communication through the internet. Phone calls and SMS can be supported in this model blurring the lines between tablet and smartphone.

With the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G, you have a lot of choices to suit your wireless needs. Following the previous models of the Galaxy line up, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is operated by the Android 2.2 OS also known as Froyo. This means the capability to browse popular websites that can’t be opened in smart phones.

Unlike an ordinary tablet, this tab can run two to three applications at the same time enabling multitasking. Because of its operating system, third party applications are downloadable and can be installed immediately. Software applications like games, health-related apps, and more can be searched in the net. Moreover, playing games and watching videos in the Samsung Galaxy Tab is an enjoyable feat. You can use it for hours with the high definition graphics in the screen.

The audio is good, too. There is built-in music player software which you can easily customize with your favorite songs. The network connection speed is respectable depending upon your location. It has two built-in cameras, one in the front which is perfect for conferences and video calls; the other camera is located at the upper left back of the tab. The front camera has a basic 1.3 megapixels while the back has 3 megapixels, it can serve as a basic camera.

The battery life is quite impressive for a tablet. It can last up to 6 hours or even a day depending on its usage. However, there are seldom momentarily lags but are not that noticeable.

For a device that’s situated between a laptop and a smart phone, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is arguably the best Android based device that sits in the sub-niche between smartphone and full-size tablet.

Thoughts about laptops and tablets.

Technology has been moving at a fast pace and mobility is the fashion trend today. Every establishment or institution is expected to have a Wi-Fi connection for its consumers. This is because people have become socially involved in the virtual media. The internet has affected everything and it is accessible to every person in the world. Everyone wants to have a permanent presence in the internet anytime and anywhere. Laptops and high end tablets are considered to be the latest mediums to keep this access. One can never have everything so if you are torn between these two gadgets, always remember to choose the one that can benefit you most and cover your needs. It all depends entirely on your preference.

Laptops were made so that people can carry their computers anywhere they go. It’s similar to a normal desktop personal computer. Compared to a tablet, a laptop has a faster processor and multi-tasking capabilities. But there are several drawbacks of having a laptop. One of them is its lack of 3g connection which is already installed in some tablets. You can still access the internet through a Wi-Fi connection or a broadband connection but the speed depends on your location. What makes a tablet so interesting is its newness to the market. A tablet is a technology innovation having a 3g capacity, but has additional specifications to resemble a computer. It is lighter than a laptop. Most tablets are shaped like a book, making it perfect for reading e-books. It comes in a slate form. The screen may measure up to fourteen inches. The overall look of most tablets can be described as sleek and compact. It does not have a physical keyboard which only means it is just a screen. Like a laptop, tablets have an operating system. This is why it can perform basic computing services like browsing the internet, taking pictures, e-mails, and more. However, tablets use touch screen as the primary input device. The virtual keyboard is used when typing. This may cause a little difficulty at first because of the small buttons. Although it would be easier to type once you get the hang of it. Good thing about being a touch screen device is you get to enjoy scrolling and zooming objects directly on the screen which you can’t normally do on a laptop. There is also a special pen used for easier navigation. Your handwriting will be the input. However, tablets do not have an optical drive making its memory capacity lower than a normal laptop. You can opt to buy an external drive for a larger capacity. Other than that, some people still prefer using their laptops instead of tablets because of it is not capable of multi-tasking.

Companies like Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and others have produced their respective tablets and are thoroughly used worldwide today. Two of the most popular tablets are the Galaxy Tab from Samsung and the iPad 2 from Apple.

Intel comes out fighting in the Tablet CPU battle.

Intel have just laid bare the full specifications of their latest offerings in the battle for tablet based CPU's. More accurately these components are called SoC's or Systems on Chip because they are in fact a complete system.

The two Intel Atom branded SoC's are the Z650 and the Z670. The big brother of the two, the Z670 has a whopping 1500 MHZ clock speed with a tiny 3W TDP. Remember this includes an on-chip GPU as well.

Have a look at the full specifications of the Atom Z650 and Z670. The difference is that the junior model is clocked at 1200MHZ. Which-Laptop.com rate both SoC equally for energy efficiency at 100%. The best rating any CPU (SoC) can get. For comparison purposes the iPad 2 CPU gets 96%.

Despite the recent announcement the Z670 is already being used by Samsung in their soon to be released and rather nifty looking Samsung PC 7.

Acer Iconia review and comparison

Following on from Mondays laptop/netbook identity crisis with the Samsung 7 series sliding keyboard, today I am looking at the dual screen Acer Iconia.

As you can see from the gallery below the Acer Iconia is a bit special. The images aptly demonstrate the UI innovation in the new hybrid device.

But is the Acer Iconia the beginning of a new revolution in computing design or just a very expensive executive web browser?

Full review of the Acer Iconia.

The hardware inside the Acer Iconia is way above that in a conventional tablet although at the same time it is a little bit dated. Not only, like the Samsung series 7, does the Iconia not know what it is but it also has the more serious problem of not knowing who is meant to use it. But I still want one.

Which-Laptop.com writes:

"There are still quite a few unknowns with this tablet. For example the price is a best guess based on rumours and the tablet will probably include a docking station with more connections on it. Also the release date I mentioned previously is speculation as well. Add to this and I don't even know what it will be called or perhaps it will just have a model number..."

The Motorola Xoom wifi

The Motorola xoom tablet with wifi has :-250-Cortex-A9 CPU, Tegra 2 ULP Geforce GPU, 1 GB of ram a 32 GB hard disk and a 10 inch screen. The Motorola XOOM is ground-breaking. Partly because of the hardware inside it and partly due to the operating system, Android 3 from Google, specifically designed for tablets.

Follow the links above to for full details or read on for a summary of the Motorola XOOM soon to be released with WiFi only in the UK.

On the good side and comparing to an Apple iPad 2.
  1. Superior CPU and GPU especially where games are concerned.
  2. Higher resolution screen than an iPad 2.
  3. A USB port and a Micro SD card slot.
  4. Flash compatibility and as if that where not good enough, Tegra support for Flash acceleration.

All of this is not present on the admittedly more stylish, easier to use iPad 2.

The end of an era brings laptop bargains galore.

The i3-380m CPU is likely one of the last processors from Intel before they all finally move to the much hailed Sandy Bridge architecture. With recent announcements like an ultra-budget Celeron Sandy Bridge CPU it seems that it really is a case of out with the old and in with the new.

Certainly Sandy Bridge brings with it great improvements but the original i3s, I think, are a long way away from their sell by date, this is one of the best and because of its imminent replacements are turning up in some absolute bargain laptops.

The i3-380m CPU from Intel is at the top of the bottom. The i3 series is clearly aimed at all but the cheapest of laptops but this model, bar one other (the 390m) is the top. As a result you might find it in surprisingly high performing laptops.

There are a number of reasons for this. First up is that it has the integrated memory controller typical to all the i3, i5 and i7 series CPUs. This makes the CPU more efficient and therefore more powerful than some CPUs with apparently higher specifications.

For example the i3 380m easily outperforms all but the most extreme Core 2 Duo CPUs we used to hear so much about a few years ago. In large part it is this integrated memory controller that takes the credit. By having the circuits that control the flow of data, actually on the CPU, rather than in a separate logic unit significantly decreases the age old technology problem of the memory bottleneck.

Add to this a greatly improved GPU, again built on to the CPU and you have a winning combination. If you are buying an entry level laptop, perhaps for a student or the kids, rest assured they will easily be able to indulge in smooth playing multi-media and entry level gaming as well with the i3 380m.

So I guess as Intel announce the death of the first mobile i7 it won't be long before the i3 follows and is replaced probably by the i3-2xxx but for the laptop bargain hunter the time is ripe for some great deals.

The new Intel Celeron B810 - Sandy Bodge CPU

OK Sandy Bodge might be a bit harsh and any advancement in performance at the same price is welcome but the Intel Celeron B810 Sandy Bridge CPU has had seriously loads of features chopped out of it.

Macbook Pro 17 reviewed

I have to offer some criticism, mainly in general but some specifics as well. Please don't send the Apple police or blow up my web server it is just an opinion and I am well aware there are millions of people who will disagree with me.

If you accept that the Macbook is what it is and it isn't what it isn't. Then it is probably the best at what it is but the age old Macbook value for money issue rears its head as usual.

New Macbook GPUs

With the release of the new Macbooks in the US and the UK, Which laptop have showcased the three principal GPUs in the latest Macbooks.

They are the integrated Intel HD 3000 which could be the best integrated GPU bar-none, in fact it is better than many dedicated GPUs.

Next up is the rather bland Radeon 6490m but it still turns up in Macbooks in excess of $1000 and last but not least is the top of the Macbook range Radeon 6750m. To get a 17 inch Pro Macbook with one of these in will cost you in excess of $2000.

The Battle for Sandy Bridge.

With all the fuss about the newest generation of Intel mobile CPUs the top Sandy Bridge laptop CPUs are compared, rated and explained in plain language.

i7 2920xm
i7 2820qm
i7 2720qm
i7 2635qm
i7 2630qm

If you are thinking of buying a laptop in the coming months and you are looking for something a bit above the average as far as power, flexibility and portability are concerned. You would do well to understand about the top range Intel i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs and their differences.
