House Color Popularity Results for Sudbury, MA 2010

The chart below gives a little different picture of the real estate market in Sudbury, MA from the usual numbers and predictions realtors often present. The good news is that this year's 178 total home sales for Sudbury are right in the typical annual range. I've been doing this color analysis for several years now, and to my surprise this is the first year that white is not the most popular color. The most popular color for 2010 is gray, followed by tan, then white in a close third place. Together these three colors make up 2/3rds of the market.

I never used to think much about the affect that a color had on the saleability of a house other than the old urban legends that declared brown and blue as the hardest color houses to sell. But several years ago I took out a buyer couple and noticed immediately that they tended to gravitate to red houses, so I changed their search results to concentrate on red houses and they found the perfect house within a week. And, yes, it was red.

If you're thinking about painting your house or changing the color to prep the house for sale give me a call at 978-580-1069, I'd be glad to point you in the right direction.

Qosmio X500-149 review- Unwrapping your new laptop

My Qosmio X500-149 arrived today. I was very excited because I wanted to see how much of an improvement it would be over the X500-116.

And as far as the packaging goes, it was a big step backwards!

The Graveyards of Concord, MA

You may think that graveyards are spooky places to be visited on Halloween, but you might just want to reconsider and think of them as beautifully landscaped recreational spaces that are repositories for much of their town's history, for example, Sleepy Hollow Cemetary contains Author's Ridge, and buried therein are the pillars of 19th century American literature. In this video I'll take you on a tour of the Old Hill Burying Ground, the South Burying Place, and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetary in Concord, MA. I hope you enjoy.

Toshiba Qosmio X500-149 Laptop Review

This is a very exciting offering from Toshiba especially compared to the current offerings in the UK laptop market. Toshiba usually have a much lower spec in their UK laptops compared to the US but this is nearly identical to the x505-q898 available in the US. If you are after something a bit special for well under £2000 then read on because you will spend nearly half as much again to get the same from Alienware and at least double from Rock.

Acer Aspire Ethos 5943G-7748G64Wnss

This laptop is Black and Grey and we think Not the best looking laptop but you shouldn't expect that from Acer. It looks OK, modern and clean.

The screen, for me is a bit of a dissapointment also. A mere 1366x768 screen resolution in conjunction with a Blu-Ray player is a bit silly and if playing super-high quality movies is a very big deal for you, then I would look elsewhere.

On a positive note if gaming, above the basics, but not at the very expensive Alienware end is what you want then take a close look at the full review of the Acer Aspire Ethos 5943G-7748G64Wnss. The otherwise dissapointing screen resolution doesn't make much difference here because most modern games on this GPU won't run on high details at a higher res anyway. Also, even with the DDR3 GPU memory it still packs a punch above most GPUs you can get in mid-price laptops.

ASUS X52F-EX571V laptop review

Look at the design and the specs. It is apparent the ASUS X52F-EX571V will not be winning any awards. But look closer and compare what you get for the price and it looks more attractive than the yuck brown design.

I am a big fan of the Intel i3, i5 and i7 series CPUs. One of the reasons is the Intel HD graphics support built in. I will never forget the moment I took off from London Heathrow with smooth graphics at 1024x768 res using just an i3 and this graphics card. This is where we think it would be best used and how good we think it will be at it
  • If a low price is important
  • For someone who has limited requirements like word processing, web surfing or other light user needs
  • For somebody looking to create their own media files like, video or music
  • For the user who needs decent portability

This doesn't mean the X52F-EX571V cannot be used for anything else but have a read of this full review to make sure if it is suitable for your intended use or not.

Why You Should Not Buy a House Through the Listing Agent

Through my own experience and by hearsay it seems that the urban legend about getting a better deal by buying a house through the listing agent is running rampant. This amazes me since a home buyer is always better off having a Buyer Agent working for them. Thus, here is the real deal on the 5 most common myths......

MYTH 1: I'll get a better price.
Some people think the agent will share negotiating information with them, such as how low the sellers are willing to go. Not so - make no mistake about this.... the listing agent is hired by the seller to get the best price possible for them, even if they know what the seller will do they can't disclose it to anybody without authorization by the seller. They are ethically and legally bound to sell that house for the most money possible. Along that same line, there also exists the misconception that since the seller is saving half of the commission, they can lower the sale price by that amount. This is not the case - the commission is set in the original listing contract which is a contract between the listing agent's Broker and the Seller, so the unless the Broker also becomes part of the negotiations, or they have agreed up front to what's called a Variable Rate or Dual Rate commission (the seller pays a different rate if the listing agent sells the house themself)  the seller is paying the full amount no matter whether the buyer has their own Buyer's Agent (representation) or not.

MYTH 2: I will get a kickback of at least 1% from the listing agent

Almost all Real Estate brokerages discourage or don't allow kickbacks. No Realtor I know would do this. Although there seems to be the urban legend style "I know someone whose [friend, neighbor, cousin, coworker...] did this" it is actually very rare. You also need to know that your mortgage provider may have a serious problem with a kickback, and that well into the buying process you could lose your mortgage approval. Also, reputable Brokers who agree to a kickback will send the IRS a 1099 form documenting the payment so you may face tax consequences.

MYTH 3: I don't need a Buyer Agent - the listing agent is my agent and will help me
Oh boy, this one always gets me.... Even if you agree to "Disclosed Dual Agency" which means the listing agent's Broker works for both you and the seller, but the listing agent still works for the Seller, their primary responsibility is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS to help and protect the Seller. No matter how nice the listing agent may be, when a choice has to be made that is a conflict between your interests and the Seller's, the agent will always do what is in the Seller's interest. This means they do not need to tell you that a outdoor wood boiler powerplan has been approved to be built on that lot behind you, or that 30 years ago this land was a gun club and no one really knows how much lead is or isn't still in the ground. The agent you’re buying through also has a vested interest in your buying THEIR listing (house) and will not encourage you to look at similar ones of better value even if they know of them. It is important to remember that if you buy through the listing agent, no one in this whole process is looking out for your interests except you.

MYTH 4: The listing agent will get the seller to take a lower price because they are highly motivated to put the deal together.

This can really backfire for reasons related to Myth 3. First of all, the listing agent cannot legally assist you in deciding your buying strategy, which includes preparing a comparative market analysis to determine the correct buying price for the home and determining the terms that you will make a part of your offer. Only a Buyer's Agent can do this. The listing agent's sole responsibility is to take the offer you have decided to make with the terms you have decided to include and deliver it to the Seller. They can analyze your offer and prepare a fresh market analysis for their Seller to determine if it's in the Seller's best interests, but ultimately any decision on your offer is solely that of the Seller.

MYTH 5: A Buyer's Agent is going to cost me a lot of money.
A Buyer Agent is paid out of the commission the seller has agreed to pay to the listing agent's Broker, they have decided on what the "split" will be and both Seller and Broker have signed it in writing. So here's the thing, it costs you nothing to have a Buyer's Agent and your Buyer Agent is the only person in the whole home buying process that is totally and completely looking out for your interests. So why wouldn't you want one? They will protect you from knowable pitfalls and get you the home you want for the lowest price they are able.

I function as both a Listing Broker/Agent and an Accredited Buyer Agent. My preference is definitely to be one or the other in all my transactions. I find ultimately that all the parties involved are much happier and better off with a clearly defined set of roles and loyalties and no question at any time who it is I'm working for.

Let me work for you!

Comet PLC boss Hugh Harvey Rogue policies claim

Here is an excerpt from a well known laptop forum:

I cannot believe what has just happened.

Got a laptop on-line from www.comet.co.uk and decide to take it back to store because I wasn't happy with it. They said I could do this when I spoke to them before ordering.

First the store tells me they will not take it back and when I insist they say they must 'search my hard drive to make sure I have not put any illegal images on it before they can process the refund!'

I almost smacked him one but held my nerve. He then called some guy over who proceeded to look at my browsing history before giving me a refund. All this happened in front of a queue of customers at the customer service desk. I thought I was going to explode with embarrassment. They made me feel like a criminal.

What can I do about this. And I don't mean just make a complaint. Is this legal?

Appreciate your comments.

This came from http://www.notebookforums.com/thread234981.html

It interested me so I googled further and got some more detail here.

http://which-laptop.com/forum/8-laptop-complaints/9-accused-of-being-a-criminal-by-comet-manager

It cant be for real. We all know that big company bosses are profit focused but if the suggestions are even close to the truth then nobody will ever buy a Comet PLC share again. And Sir Hugh, Is he a Sir? I suspect he wants to be. Will be lucky if he ever works again.

My gut feeling is that somebody smart enough to run a modern PLC does not get personally involved in this manner.

Full review of the Toshiba Satellite C655-S5119

This laptop is a good buy. OK it is a little cheap looking but it is also a rather cheerful laptop. The Satellite C655-S5119has got some nice features for the price.

A DVD writer, great quality keyboard and a budget yet very new CPU, the Pentium P6100.

This laptop is definately not perfect and definately for the feature conscious or demanding power user. But for the price I think it is quite special. Have a look at the review of the Toshiba Satellite C655-S5119 Laptop.

FIRST TIME HOME BUYING

You're about to take the plunge and buy a house - congratulations! When working with a first time buyer these are the things I tell them they should do.

1. GET YOUR FINANCING IN PLACE

If, like all of us, you want to get the best house you can for the least amount of money, you need to make sure you are negotiating from a position of strength. Price is only one element in the negotiations to have your offer accepted, and is not always the most important one. Other aspects, such as the financial strength of the buyer and their down-payment or the closing date are also critical to a seller.

The only way to make a strong offer in today's market is to get "pre-approved". This means that all your financial information has been checked and verified by a qualified loan professional and their lender finds that if nothing changes they will lend you the money you need to purchase a home of a certain selling price. The mortgage broker will also give you an ideal price range, your maximum debt load, and whether there are any credit issues you should correct before you make an offer. This process takes a few days so it's best to begin well before you start looking for a home. Note: do not confuse this with getting "pre-qualified" which is a brief and superficial process and does not mean you will actually be approved for a mortgage of that amount.

2. GET A BUYER’S AGENT - YOU NEED REPRESENTATION

Did you know that many homes are sold without a sign ever going up or an ad ever being put in the paper? These great deals go to those people who are committed to working with their own buyer’s agent.

Listing agents place ads to get you to call them - they want to handle both the seller and buyer end of a deal. When reading an ad know that what is not mentioned in the ad is usually more important than what is. For example, many homes have some drawback that any good seller's agent will never mention in an ad, such as traffic noise, power lines, or outdated plumbing and electrics. Remember that the person marketing the home is representing the seller. When you look at a house with the seller’s agent they will not critique the property or point out any drawbacks you should know about - it’s up to you to find them out on your own. Or you can get your own agent - known as a buyer’s agent.

Your buyer agent looks out for you and your best interests and owes their total loyalty to you during negotiations on price, inspections and contingencies. The fee for the buyer's agent is paid out of the commission the seller pays when their home sells. The listing agent can work with you as a buyer for the property but they must disclose that in the event of a conflict of interest they work for and their loyalties are to the seller and in all cases they will look out for the seller's interests above yours. In other words, make sure you understand what your agent can and cannot do for you and who they work for.

3. CHECK OUT THE PAPERWORK BEFORE YOU MAKE AN OFFER

You would think that an offer would be pretty simple, tell them what you will pay, what you expect to be included in the sale, and what date you'll buy the house. In today's litigious society there are many opportunities to get into legal trouble out of innocent naivete. The contracts are very complex with language that can favor the seller or the buyer depending on how it's written, so it's best to review a set of blank contracts well before you write an offer. Your agent (or your attorney) can explain anything you have questions about and will give you a step-by-step idea of how the process will go. When you are familiar with the contracts and the process you will be ready when the right house comes along.

4. DON'T BE PUSHED INTO A HOUSE BUT DON’T BE AFRAID TO STEP UP FOR THE RIGHT ONE

Your agent should show you everything available that meets your requirements. Don't make a decision on any house until you feel that you've seen enough to pick the best one. Especially if a town is new to you, it is a good idea to get a feel for the town and its neighborhoods. A good agent has the patience and experience to work with you until you find the right house.

Having said that, however, there are two circumstances where you may need to make a fairly quick or bold decision. There are times when a home comes on the market and is what you have been looking for ... a value-priced house in a good location in great shape. Odds are that there are several buyers who are also looking for that same house and if I say this one won't last when I call, you should be willing to look at it immediately and make a decision quickly.

The other situation is that it's your first or second weekend looking at houses when you find "the one". It's great - just what you were looking for. But....you've only seen five other houses and what if you find one weeks from now that you like more? Sad to say, I have had clients in this situation and who a month later were saying, "Gosh I wish we had jumped at that house.... it was just what we wanted." Sometimes the right one is one of the first few you see. Trust your instincts.

4. REVIEW THE SELLER'S DISCLOSURES BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY OFFER ON A PROPERTY

No house is ever going to be perfect. So, the price you offer should reflect your best opinion of what the property is worth to you based on its current condition. Though not required by law, most agents recommend that their sellers complete a comprehensive seller's disclosure sheet that gives them a chance to tell you about the house's systems and any events that have taken place with them while they have lived there. You should read this carefully and when in doubt have your agent probe for further clarification of the information provided so that you are not surprised after your offer is accepted.

When looking at a house you're serious about, keep your eyes open for small and visible items that may need repair or replacing.  Do not assume the homeowner will do these, and adjust your offer price accordingly.  Serious structural, deferred maintenance and/or safety items that come up during the home inspection that you could not have known about or seen i.e. plumbing, electrical or chimney issues can be negotiated during the inspection contingency period. Find out whether the seller will remedy these or if you have to adjust your offer to reflect the cost to you for repairs.

5. ASK FOR A HOME WARRANTY IN YOUR OFFER

There's no law saying that the seller has to include a home warranty with the sale of their home (they cost around $600) but if you don't ask for one you most likely won't get one. As a first time home buyer you are not familiar with the cost and maintenance of the various systems of a house, so having a home warranty (they're usually for a year from your purchase date) can take a lot of the worry out of "what do I do when the hot water heater doesn't work" issues.

6. HAVE A PROFESSIONAL HOME INSPECTION
You should budget for getting the property inspected by a licensed professional home inspector, pest inspector, well inspector and/or any other kind of inspector that the house you're looking for typically requires. Have your buyer's agent recommend a few they trust and interview them on the phone before you pick one. A seller's agent cannot legally recommend a home inspector to a buyer. The inspectors will let you know the true condition of what you are buying and what kind of repairs/upgrades to the systems or structure will be required in the near future. Start with the home inspector and pest inspector and if they recommend that you have specialty expert inspect a troublesome item do what they say. The money you spend on the inspections could save you lots of money on repairs in the future. And don't be afraid to ask your inspector to explain how to work or maintain appliances or systems, they're working for you and are very willing to answer any and all questions..

7. GET A FRESH COMPARATIVE MARKET ANALYSIS ON THE SPECIFIC PROPERTY

Ask your buyer's agent to prepare a market analysis (CMA) of the property before you make the offer. A seller's agent cannot legally do one for you. This market analysis will tell you what similar properties are selling for. A CMA can't be done with a bunch of data from the internet, unless you or your agent has been inside the comparable properties used in the analysis you are likely to come up with false results. The CMA should also include only properties sold within the last 3 months, anything older than that is from a different market and should be considered as such. Your agent will help you interpret the analysis, but you should always review it in detail to be sure that your offer is based on sound thinking and that you are very confident that you are paying at or below market value for the property. The last thing you want is to find out that you overpaid for a property without knowing it. (You may choose to knowingly overpay if you if it's a bidding war and you have to have this house, but at least it will be an informed decision.)
CONCLUSION

Buying your first home is an exciting (if nervewracking) process. It is important to have someone work with you who is looking out for your interests, is patient and who knows the local market well.  I have helped many first time buyers find a house they love and will make it the least confusing, and as positive as possible for you every step of the way.

If I can be of help to you, don't hesitate to call me, Mike Hunter at 978-580-1069 to talk about making you a homeowner!

Is my house haunted?

Many people do not believe in ghosts and hauntings but a large part of the population is intrigued by the idea of possible having unseen co-habitants. I hope you find the following information either amusing or helpful depending on your personal beliefs.

Have you ever suddenly noticed a strange smell, had little things disappear and show up somewhere else, or do your lights and doors seem to have a mind of their own? These are some of the common things associated with a haunting.

In Massachusetts, real estate that is haunted is considered to be "psychologically impacted". That is, because no matter what you see on TV or read or hear, nobody knows what a haunting really is, why it happens, or what the effects are. Everything about hauntings is theory, but having grown up in a haunted house I can tell you that once you rule out the idea that your mind is playing tricks on you (which in some cases can certainly happen) you begin to believe in ghosts. Usually it's something you can live with and need not fear.

Throughout all the literature, and there are a lot of experts out there with theories,  there are several common threads that taken alone or together seem to indicate that a ghost is present. I'll share them with you now, not in any particular order of importance. Remember, too, that there are often natural explanations of phenomena and it is important to look for these and not assume the cause of anything strange must be paranormal.

1. Unexplained Noises... in old horror movies of old they used to have the sounds of chains dragging to indicate a ghost. In actuality the noises can be very ordinary but puzzling. After living in your house for a while you get to know the typical noises that are present in your home, especially with the changing of the seasons. Sometimes our imagination gets the best of us and we think these are signs of a ghost presence.  What you would be looking for are things that are not typical, the most common being footsteps, banging/knocking/scratching sounds, objects being dropped, furniture being moved around, and doors opening/slamming.

2. Objects unaccountably moving...  This covers several types of odd happenings - a picture falling off the wall, a book being across the room from the bookshelf or even witnessing an object moving on its own against gravity. Things kept in one room may show up in another. Doors may open or close on their own. When you do have it happen you'll know it, i.e. you're absolutely certain you left the door open and you hear it shut or even rarely you'll watch it open or shut. It is very important in this category to rule out natural causes such as vibrations, drafts, unlevel floors/doors, gravity etc.

3. Electricity and gadgets have a mind of their own.  Lights, TV's, radios, and other gadgets going on or off by themselves can be frightening and could be paranormal  They could also be due to faulty electrical circuits or switches, power surges or faulty electronics. Related to this is a faucet turning on and off by itself with no natural cause like a bad washer or loose handles. The real "tell" in this category is that it happens even after having a service person inspect it, and it happens many times.

4. Your stuff disappears and then reappears at a later time in a very obvious place ... I used to experience this all the time with my car keys until I learned to hang them up in the same place when I get home, wasn't a ghost, just my bad! This phenomenon usually happens with small items, keys, jewelry, favorite pens, etc. and it's a real event when you look high and low for the item, can't find it, and then it reappears in a totally obvious place that you couldn't possibly have missed even if you were blindfolded. This phenomenon is also reported a lot when renovations take place (something ghosts seem to take a strong dislike to).  Putting down a tool and reaching for it minutes later to have it gone are not uncommon.

5. Sightings... these can be anything from a real-looking person who fades away to a shadow out of the corner of your eye to an amorphous misty shape. It is very easy for the eye to trick the brain and we think we see something (especially in our peripheral vision) that is not there. Elephant trainers have this happen a lot with adolescent elephants, they "see" ghosts and scare themselves, which can be dangerous. This phenomena is the least trustworthy of all the things associated with a haunting, and can usually be explained by tricks of light, a natural source like car lights casting shadows, or just your imagination. Orbs are the digital interpretation of light reflecting off dust. They are not spirits. Legitimate sightings of full bodied apparitions are very rare. A bit of trivia, until the early 1900's ghosts were reported to be dressed in contemporary dress for the time in which they were seen, it was later in the century that people began reporting sightings of old pirates, roman legionnaires, and soldiers in civil war garb.

6. Your pets start acting strangely ... animals are considered to have heightened sensitivity to ghosts. Their hearing and eyesight are so superior to ours that I have to believe that their sensitivity to things otherworldly could also be very true. The most obvious "tell" is that the animal won't go into a room, cowers, barks or growls for no reason, or seems to be watching something that you can not see.

7. Pockets of cold air where they shouldn't be ... beyond the obvious open window, leaky insulation, and draft, these phenomena are featured in many reality shows and horror movies. The presense of a sudden, extreme temperature change in any direction, hot or cold,  has long been associated with ghosts. If you've got one you may want to have an energy audit by the gas or electric company before you jump to any conclusions. If you still have it after an audit and corrections are made you could very well have a ghostly visitor.

8. Unexplainable smells... typically perfume/cologne or tobacco smoke that come and go. Researchers have concluded that our sense of smell is very closely tied to our memory. If you occasionally smell pleasant or really unpleasant odors that smell like household items that you do not use, strong floral perfumes, rotting meat, or something burning, this could be a strong clue that you have paranormal activity. Uexpected smells often occur in combination with other phenomena, such as footsteps or shadows and while very hard to prove, is considered highly indicative of ghost activity.

9. Being touched or hearing a voice... this one is the one phenomena that most creeps people out (understandably!). Some examples: you feel someone sitting down beside you on the bed; something brushes past you; something pokes you or taps you on the upper body; something tugs your hair. If you've experienced any of these take heart in knowing that extreme examples of this are rare. And if you're the only person to experience this it is likely just your mind playing tricks on you, and conversely the phenomena is more likely a true "tell" when more than one person experienced the same thing either together or individually at different times.

No matter what strange activities you are experiencing, the odds are that your house probably isn't haunted. There are usually perfectly natural and rational explanations for almost everything in my list. Every other cause for the happenings should be ruled out before the explanation of ghosts is seriously considered. If you do come to the conclusion that your house is haunted, don't panic - the general consensus in the literature is that ghosts are not there to hurt you. It appears that in most cases, the current and past residents can learn to peacefully coexist!

Dell Inspiron Duo Technical Specifications

The new and rather cool Inspiron Duo from Dell has some great technical specifications. For example the Intel Atom n550 is super powerful for such an energy efficient CPU. Unfortunately however the on-board GPU the Intel GMA 3150 is rather less special.

Overall I think Dell have made a good balance between keeping the price down and the power up. Here are the full technical specifications of the Dell Inspiron Duo.

Full review of the new Inspiron Duo from Dell

The Dell Inspirion Duo has been hotly anticipated and is certain to be a sales success. And I admit I like it - allot. But lets put this offering into the correct context. The Duo is certainly innovative and offers big practical steps forward compared to the twist and fold model of morphing offered by the HP TM2.

Anyway here is the review of the Dell Inspiron Duo.

It is fairly un-disputed that Apple make some of the most stylish laptops and gadgets available today. But many of them like Macbooks, iPhones, iPads and iPods have special cleaning and care requirements to make sure that sensitive surfaces and components are not damaged, cosmetically or functionally ath the same time as trying to maintain th brand-new look.

TechLink are probably the highest quality, highest reputed and biggest manufacturer of cleaning and care products for Macbook, LED Cinema, iPad and iPhone and they are actually sold by Apple on their website.

At first glance these Apple cleaning and care products look like good value but when you get to the checkout and sales tax/VAT and shipping are added on they are not quite such a bargain. Now you can buy the Techlink Apple cleaning range with all prices inclusive and with world-wide free delivery.

New Intel i7 Low Voltage CPUs

Hot on the heels of the intel i7 9290xm mega power CPU, Intel have divulged more details of the low voltage, low power consumption CPUs based on the same architecture.

Low power models include low-voltage Core i7-2610LM, 2620LM and 2640LM CPUs, and two ultra-low voltage models, the Core i7-2630UM and i5-2530UM.

The Sager NP 3101 Reviewed

Sager are not exactly a household name but if you take a look at the Sager website they have a fair few laptops you probably wouldn't mind having exactly in your household.

Today I am looking at the baby of their range but it has some quite grown up features in it. Most notably the i3 Ultra Low Voltage CPU making it perfect for a portable and not too far off what a gamer might like as well.

To find out more about Sager have a look at the full NP 3101 review and specification on Which Laptop.

Intel i3 330um - Ultra low voltage CPU

The Intel i3 330um is the ultra-low voltage CPU from Intel featuring many of the enhancements and improvements over Core 2 Duo that you would expect from i3 but with a comparatively tiny power consumption.

Not to be confused with the more powerful and power hungry i3 330m this little beauty couldn't get much more green if it was powered by solar panels on its front side bus or half a billion tiny wind turbines on each of its transistors.

Find out more about the 330um.

CONFIRMED! Brasso Gadget Care - Imminenent Arrival! CONFIRMED!

At long last an actual date has been set for Brasso Gadget Care to arrive.

It will be in the Screen-Wipes warehouse on Thursday 18th November! All pre-orders will be shipped same day - Guaranteed! And I don't use that word very often.

If anyone is wondering what took so long then the real truth is - I am not sure. I don't know if it is an efficiency thing. I placed orders from 3 different sources who each gave different failed delivery estimates. And now guess what? They are all coming at once.

Perhaps they put the Brasso Gadget Granny in charge of logistics? Pull ya finger out Vera my iPhone is a mess!

The Intel i7 2920xm laptop CPU

The top CPU currently on Intel's books for laptops is the i7 2920xm. It has a top speed of 3500mhz and that is scalable in stages from 2500mhz using Intel Turbo Boost technology. With a whopping 8mb cache this is obviously going to be a CPU that gets featured in the most powerful laptops of 2011.

While the difference between lowest and highest speed (1000mhz) is not as great as some older i7 CPUs, making it less flexible it is still likely to feature in portable or even ultra-portable laptops. It has an integrated Intel HD 200 GPU which is currently un-benchmarked but is definitely a big step up from the Intel HD GPUs featured on older i series CPUs.

This fact will make, for example, a nice slim ultra-portable say like Toshiba's Portege, with one of these beasts in it, but no a dedicated card a very interesting laptop to benchmark for games.

Find out more about the Intel i7 2920xm laptop CPU.

NVIDIA geforce gtx 680

Nvidia have only just released the 580 and are about to undergo a relatively long period of creating and releasing multiple permutations to suit different budgets. So what is this article about about the nvidia geforce gtx 680 all about?

Imagine my surprise while on holiday this summer I came across a guy on the beach waffling on about CUDA, Nvidia, the imminent release of the GTX 580 and other interesting gaming things. His only problem was that he was talking to a rather attractive brunette (this in itself is not a problem) who was clearly not the slightest bit interested in 'bloody graphics'.

So I lent him a sympathetic ear and this is what I discovered.

The nvidia geforce gtx 680 will not actually be called the nvidia geforce gtx 680 at all but a change in Nvidias naming convention is on the cards for the next generation of its GPUs. So with a little bit of interpretation of publicly available facts, a dash of interpolation based on previous Nvidia gtx release specifications and a healthy-ish dose of imagination I would like to start the guesswork about what the new nvidia geforce gtx 680 will be called.

And please let me know your suggestions I will see that they come to the attention of the people inside Nvidia. Assuming of course they haven't decided already.

I start the ball rolling with the nVidia FMTQ!

More soon!

Statement re the price of Brasso Gadget Care

Just posted on Screen-Wipes.com:

Ok - I know Brasso Gadget Care has been a long time coming. But I have it on really good authority that it will be in the Screen Wipes warehouse this week and will be dispatched to outstanding orders same day. As opinion grows that the Brasso supplied cloth is a bit to small to be convenient our Screen Wipes offer which includes the small Brasso Cloth and an ULTRA sized WOW microfiber is proving really popular.

However at £9.99 it is obviously a bit underpriced. The cloth alone retails for £7.99 and with outlets such as Amazon selling the just the Brasso Gadget Care for £8.99 on its own (and then only if you buy 3 - £27.99). We are going to put the price up tomorrow.

All pre-order prices will be honored and all orders taken before midnight tonight will be at the price of £9.99. You can buy our Brasso Gadget Care offer here.

Dell Inspiron Duo Flip Screen

The Dell Inspiron (FLIPPER) Duo has been anticipated for a while and Dell has finally shown off an intriguing new tablet/netbook combination.

The Dell Inspiron Duo is a touchscreen netbook with a fascinating swiveling mechanism that rotates the display inside the frame to convert the netbook into a tablet.

The three pictures you see here are actually the same laptop (although in different colors) and it could be something of a breakthrough. If I had a dollar for every time I have been told that the iPad would be perfect with a keyboard I would be rich. Well have a look at this video. Top of the range Toshiba Portege R700-185 Reviewed

The Toshiba Portege R700 range has been around for a while but they have a new top spec edition - the 185 where they have managed to squeeze in a DVD-RW drive and add to that a super powerful i7-620m CPU with a 120GB SSD hard disk and you have quite a significant specification for an Ultra Portable laptop.

Many reviewers have criticized the price at over £1600 but my view is that with the i7-620m included it is actually quite reasonable. i7-620m from Intel is a higher spec than the model number implies. It actually scores better on a number of criteria than both the apparently superior 720qm and 740m. For example look where it comes in the Best CPU for graphics league.

If you want to find out more about this potential contender for your cash then have a look at the Which Laptop review of the Toshiba Portege R700-185.

Its official - iPad is best UltraPortable device

The MSI Wind has been number 1 in the Which Laptop Ultra-Portables top ten for a while now. After Which Laptop added Apple iPad components to the review database the 16GB WiFi and 3G Apple iPad has now taken the top spot away. With a massive 9 hours battery life and built in 3G the MSI 'didn't stand a chance' said Which Laptop in their summary of the iPad.

However it is likely although unconfirmed that the WiFi only versions are unlikely to fare as well. The full range of iPads will be added to the review database for comparison purposes soon.

Brasso Gadget Care cloth quality review

Just washed my Brasso Gadget Care microfiber cloth in the washing machine. It came out perfectly usable! This is good news as the cloth does get mucky really quickly because it is small.

The best solution, in my opinion, is to use an extra large microfiber cloth with the Brasso Gadget Care but if you need a portable 'pocket' solution then you will be able to re-use the small Brasso one that comes with it.

If you want the deluxe big-cloth solution buy it here with Brasso cloth included as well.

HP Envy 17 3d in the laptop top 10

The lovely looking laptop has made the Which Laptop Media Top 10 but which position is it?

The HP Envy 17 with its sexy (yet manly) looks has been causing quite a stir in the world of laptops. It is available to order direct from HP in the US and comes with a good range of configuration options.

For example yo can choose anywhere from the intel i7 720qm CPU right up to the i7 840m as well as other options as well. Just with the 740m and no other upgrades it costs nearly $2000 however. And the reason for this is the 3d technology.

It even comes bundled with the 3d glasses and has an infrared transmitter discretely built into the lid.

Have a look at this review of the HP Envy 17 3d to see if it might be worthwhile to you.

Review of the ASUS A52F-X3

The ASUS A52F-X3 is definitely good value but it is even more definitely not an all-round performer.

It is one of the most popular laptops on Amazon.com and the best selling ASUS in the US at time of writing. I would suggest the ASUS A52F-X3 would be appropriate for the following:

  • For a person or business who wants to spend the absolute minimum possible but still get a decent spec.
  • For someone who has limited requirements like word processing, hobby photo editing or other light use.
  • If you are looking to create your own media files like, video or music
  • For the person looking for a laptop that is both sleek and sexy but in a cheap plastic sort of way.

This doesn't mean the A52F-X3 cannot be used for anything else but have a read of this full review to make sure if it is suitable for your intended use or not.

Brasso Gadget Care Cleaning A Laptop - Here & Now

Reproduced with kind permission from Screen-Wipes.com

Brasso claim that there new wonder-product can clean any gadget. Including laptops and TVs. So I am going to put it to the test and see how good it is on a 15.6inch HP laptop.

At the same time I am going to test out some other products for the purposes of comparison.

First up meet the 3 products I will be comparing.

Brasso Gadhet Care Laptop Cleaning

Brasso Gadget Care

AM Screen Cleaner and microfiber

AM Regular cleaner

AM 200ml Gel Cleans a laptop

AM GEL Cleaner

Here is a closer look at the screen of the laptop. I know it is a poor image but it really shows the fingerprints. I would estimate that the newest prints on the laptop are 24 hours and the oldest are around 6 months. So I am not necessarily expecting a perfect finish.

finger prints on a laptop screen

Anyway here I am giving the grubby laptop a good old polish and then I will tell you how they all did.

Brasso Gadget Care Cleaning A Laptop - The Movie

How much fun can you have on a website?

Brasso Gadget Care Vs AM - The findings

The findings. All the products Worked a treat. The best spray was definitely the Brasso Gadget Care. It has a clean fresh aroma and left its portion of the screen completely perfect, dust and print free. Add to that the nice gloopy gel consistencey meant it wasn't running down the screen. The smearing you probably saw in the video was down to me using a little bit too much juice. So that, wasn't a fault of the product. Having said that the cloth is not very big and I had to use a bigger microfiber in order to easily rectify my mistake. Had I not over-juiced it the cloth would have been OK on this 15.6inch screen. Much bigger and it would have been awkward.

The AM GEL is as good at cleaning but despite being called a gel not quite as well, gel-like.I preferred to spray it on the cloth first. The cloth is a bit better than the Brasso Gadget Care and it is at least twice the size which meant I could bail myself out of trouble when I put too much Brasso on.

The regular AM screen-cleaner is probably cheaper to use than the Brasso but was nowhere near as lovely smelling and effective at cleaning. The bigger bottle would make regular cleaning of big screen TVs economical.

Dirty laptop cleaning conclusions

The Brasso fluid is the best but the cloth isn't big enough for medium-large items in my opinion. So the very best combination would be the Brasso Gadget Care with a bigger cloth. So, because I like you and because I want you to buy my stuff I have put together this special Brasso Gadget Care package where you get the Brasso package including there little cloth and an extra giant size cloth £8.99 rrp in the bundle. The WOW ultra microfiber is a whopping 40cm x 40cm.

Intel i3 350m review.

Which-Laptop.com have just posted a review of the Intel i3 350m. It details all the best and worst points about this lower-mid range CPU from Intel.

More interestingly however the same website has published a league of the best laptop CPUs for video editing. It only compares laptop CPUs that are in their database, which is far from everything but it might be a good source of comparison if and when the range of compared CPUs grows.

They also have a whole load of other laptop statistics which might aid in the search for the best laptop for you.

Funky Gadget Cleaner Comes to Screen-Wipes

A new arrival at the Screen-Wipes warehouse today in the form of Monkey Spunk Gadget Cleaner. The Screen-Wipes testers have been frantically shining gadgets to see how good it is and have announced it is so damn good they are going to start selling the cleaner as of - NOW!

But what is Monkey Spunk? Sounds a bit rude. Monkey Spunk name is meant to get your attention. The manufacturers are amongst a rare breed in business and actually donate a percentage of the proceeds from each bottle to cancer charities.

All I know is it cleans up my PSP, DS and iPhone a treat. And at Screen Wipes they are offering it with the super big ULTRA WOW cloth which for the purposes of amusing you will be known as the GORILLA microfiber cloth.

A review of the SAMSUNG R530-JB02UK laptop

This is in the best selling list for Comet at the time of writing. The Samsung r530-ub02uk has some nice touches like the funky lid and 330m CPU but some limitations as well. Considering the specification I would suggest the battery life could be disappointing. The figure quoted in this review was supplied as an average quoted by retailers so it will probably be the best it is capable of. Find out more at the full review of SAMSUNG R530-JB02UK laptop

This laptop is a bit juicy. It has some quite impressive bits and pieces inside it. The qosmio-x505-q898 has a 740qm CPU, Geforce GTX 460m GPU, 6 GB of system ram, a 564 GB hard disk and a 18.4 inch screen. For full details and to find out if it is suitable for you read review...

Review of the ASPIRE 8943G

The Acer Aspire 8943gThis ASPIRE-8943G is good at lots of things but the most suited applications for the ASPIRE-8943G, in our opinion are the following:-

If you want the very latest in raw, bleeding edge computing power. For the gamer who is prepared to pay extra for the very best in graphics cards and other gaming essentials. For someone who needs good computing power. For somebody looking to create their own media files like, video or music.

This doesn't mean the ASPIRE-8943G cannot be used for anything else but have a read of this full Acer Aspire 8943g review to make sure if it is suitable for your intended use or not.

Reviews of Brasso Gadget Care

Found another new site that have done a review of Brasso Gadget Care the gadget cleaning product due in shops soon.

You can't buy anything from this website because it is a bit basic but you can read a really cool comparison and review of products to clean your gadgets especially if you have a PSP.

Braso Gadget Care

You see what I mean about not being able to buy Brasso Gadget Care!? But it is a very detailed review.

Have you seen any more gadget cleaning products. Excluding that silly plasticine type one where you squash it all over your phone/gadget. Have you seen that one?

Buy Brasso Gadget Care

If you are thinking of buying Brasso Gadget Care. I have seen it at the RRP of £4.99 - but only when you buy a pack of 3 + postage. Just now I found a certain mobile phone shop selling it for £12.99! Just so you don't think it is a mis-print I will say it again. £12.99.

Buy Brasso Gadget Care for £9.99 still double RRP but delivery included and you only have to buy one.

Monkey Spunk Gadget Cleaner Vs Brasso Gadget Care

On Monday Screen-Wipes.com will be publishing a review and comparison of the forth coming Brasso Gadget Care and the well establised, charity linked Monkey Spunk Gadget Cleaner.

Monkey Spunk Gadget Cleaner Vs Brasso Gadget Care

Brasso Gadget Care is TOO CHEAP!

Gadget Cleaning Retailers and distributors have been bemoaning the very low RRP of Brasso Gadget Care. Distributors only want to dispatch orders in the thousands and Brasso themselves will only accept orders in well in excess of 2500!

In addition smaller retailers are complaining at the lack of profit margin and has seen some web sites taking pre-orders at double the RRP. Even Amazon.co.uk are only accepting orders for packs of 3 at a time.

I expect all the bricks & mortar (high street etc) retailers will be adding a hefty bit on as well. Perhaps one of the supermarkets will save the day. Maybe Asda or Tesco will sell it at RRP in the audio-visual-games departments.

This will give other brands of gadget cleaner an opportunity to profit from the wave of gadget cleaner interest the launch of Brasso Gadget Care is bound to generate.

One such brand is Monkey Spunk Gadget Cleaner. The slightly daringly named brand also donates to tesyticular cancer charities for every bottle sold. Hence the dodgey name

Can Brasso Gadget Care Clean This?!

I suppose the question should be - Can ANYTHING clean this disgusting laptop?
Watch the dirty video coming soon!

Which laptop should I buy

Having focussed on almost nothing but Brasso Gadget Care for the last couple of weeks I thought I might change tack for a post or 2 and talk about choosing a laptop that is right for you.

The problem with choosing a laptop is complexity. Even if you are technically minded, weighing up the pros and cons of memory size/type, CPUs, Graphics cards, screen sizes can be a nightmare. Not to mention that what is perfect for one person is totally inappropriate for another.

Supply problems for Brasso GadgetCare?

Will Brasso GadgetCare be ready in the quantities that retailers need?

A few whispers are out that Brasso GadgetCare is having supply problems. I have heard from at least two gadget/cleaning retailers who have not received samples or literature. I really hope this is just a temporary blip - My PSP is filthy!

Brasso GadgetCare supply issues

I will update you when I hear anything.

Gadget Cleaning, care and other things.

With all the talk of Brasso Gadget Care taking all the attention I thought it appropriate to mention another Gadget cleaner coming our way very soon.

Well actually I am not allowed because for some strange reason they don't want me to? Why anyone would want their gadget cleaning product kept quiet is beyond me but that is the case.

Just to say that screen-wipes.com will soon be stocking at least two gadget cleaning/care products really soon. And they will be doing a comparison test so we know which is best.

Comment about Brasso GadgetCare Manufacturers Description

My last post deatiled the official manufacturers description for the imminentely available Brasso GadgetCare.

One thing caught my attention.

"Armed with silicone

A protective layer of silicone prevents smears and keeps your gadgets looking shiny and new."

Can this be a good thing for screens. Is it possible that the silicone could detract from image quality? Or worse, react with protective/special coatings. Brasso have obviously done their homework but I would not want to be the first person to squirt it on my new 3d TV.

Reckitt Benckiser announce Brasso Gadget Care Launch

Reckitt Benckiser have said they will launch the new product - Brasso Gadget Care in November. Its main target market is greatly removed from previous Brasso audiences.

Brasso Gadget Care is firmly placed to try and appeal to the younger generation and tech savvy marketplace. The new product is designed to work on the modern materials that make up iPods, iPhones, laptops, HDTVs and the like.

The marketing push is under wraps but as I revealed yesterday it is likely to include sponsorship of the Channel 5 hit TV show - The Gadget Show and the product will likely be this years sponsors of the Gadget Show Live.

The Brasso brand is over a hundred years old now and watching the performance of Brasso Gadget Care, a marketing leap of faith, is going to be interesting to say the least.
